FAQ

When do you arrive, and how long do you stay?

As your doula, I arrive during early active labor (usually around 4-6 cm dilated or when contractions are regular and intense) and stay through the birth and up to 1-2 hours postpartum to help with bonding and initial breastfeeding, if desired.

How do you navigate being my doula and photographer at the same time, if I have you for both?

When you make me part of your birth team as your doula, and choose the package where I offer birth photography as well, know that my role as doula comes first! While there are moments where I am standing off to the side and hands off so that your partner is the main person or your medical providers can care for you, that is when I photograph. I try to capture moments during labor, but since I’m photographing I will not be in any of the pictures so you’ll miss those moments. During prenatal visits we can discuss key images you want me to capture and I do my best to capture them, like baby arriving. And I capture any moments in the initial time postpartum and those precious newborn details. It’s a delicate balancing act that is discussed with you before the birth to ensure you get the best care you want. The photography is an add on and if you don’t want it we can adjust the packages accordingly or opt for different photography sessions like maternity and newborn.

A doula offers non-medical support, while a midwife provides clinical care. Doulas do not perform medical tasks but work alongside medical providers to support your birth experience. A midwife is seen in place of an OB during your pregnancy, while a doula is an extension of the birth team and can be used with either a midwife or OB as your care provider.

A number of studies have been surrounding the evidence on doulas and the impact they have on birth. Some of the benefits found include a lower rate of postpartum depression, 28% less likely to have a c/section, 8% more likely to have a spontaneous vaginal birth, 31% less likely to use synthetic oxytocin, 10% less likely to use any pain medication, shorter labors by 41 minutes average, 38% decrease in risk of a low 5-minute Apgar score, 34% less likely to rate their childbirth experience negatively, greater breastfeeding success, and greater self-confidence.

Many families hire a doula during the second trimester, but it’s never too early or too late. Availability can vary, so the sooner you reach out, the better.

I support births in all settings, including hospitals, birth centers, and home births. I however, do not knowingly attend “free births” where there is no medical provider present as outlined by my liability insurance and as a member of the Association of Ontario Doulas and to maintain my certification through Doula School Canada.

Absolutely! As your doula, I support all types of births—epidural, unmedicated, VBAC, planned cesareans—whatever your preferences are.

Yes! As your doula, I work with partners to help them feel confident and involved. We complement – not replace – your birth partner.
