Pain vs Intensity

Pain vs. intensity in labor and understanding the difference. People often say labor is “intense, not painful.” Especially during an unmedicated labor where they cope well.

For some, that feels empowering. For others, it feels dismissive. Both experiences are valid.

What does labor being intense mean?

When people describe labor as intense, they often mean:

  • strong, powerful sensations
  • pressure, stretching, or tightening sensations
  • sensations that come in waves
  • feelings that feel purposeful or productive

Intensity doesn’t always equal suffering, but it can still be a lot.

What does being in pain during labor feel like?

Pain is a real and valid experience in labour. It may feel like:

  • sharp, overwhelming sensations
  • burning, cramping or aching,
  • sensations that feel unmanageable;
  • a signal that support, rest or intervention is needed.

Pain is not weakness. It’s information.

The difference isn’t universal.

The same sensation can feel:

  • intense for one person
  • painful for another
  • both at different moments

And these can change hour to hour, or contraction to contraction.

What determines how labor feels?

How labour is experienced depends on things like:

  • support & environment
  • coping tools & preparation
  • position & movement
  • baby’s position
  • past trauma
  • length of labor
  • access to pain relief

This isn’t about mindset alone.

There is no “Right” way to feel.

Feeling pain doesn’t mean things like:

  • you’re doing birth “wrong”
  • you weren’t prepared enough
  • your body failed

Choosing pain relief doesn’t take away from the strength of your birth.

What is your doula’s role in your labor?

I’m not here to label your experience.

I’m here to:

  • help you cope with intensity & pain
  • offer comfort measures & grounding
  • support informed choices around pain relief
  • adapt support as your needs change
  • advocate for you without judgement

Labor can be intense, painful, empowering, hard, transformative.

Sometimes all at once.

You don’t need to minimize your experience to make it meaningful.

However your labor feels YOU deserve support.
