Why you need birth photography

Birth Photography is storytelling. Once upon a time, birth photography didn’t exist. Probably because the camera didn’t exist, yet birth was still documented. For thousands of years, birth was documented with paintings and sculptures and revered as beautiful works of art. How would photography be any different?

Now a days almost everyone has a phone with a camera on it. Most individuals would also think that because they have a phone with a camera that they are just as good at documenting memories as a professional photographer would be. But the harsh truth is, they are not. There is a big difference and a lot more that goes into photography than pointing the camera and hitting a button. Especially when it comes to birth.

Birth spaces are sacred and we want to keep oxytocin flowing. To do that you can do things like keep family and your partner close by, keeping the lights dim, keep the body moving, etc. Well if your partner is holding your hips during a surge, how are they able to take out their phone to take a picture? What if you don’t want extended family or any friends present at the hospital or for your home birth? The pictures they do get on your phone are blurry, underexposed and grainy, and look flat with no dynamics. The nurses you were hoping to be able to take a picture for you are busy checking vitals and working with other patients, they can’t take a picture of you during labor. They might be nice enough to get a family shot after delivery, but it won’t be the same.

Having a birth photographer present at your birth means that the images you get will be high quality, dynamic, and comprehensive. They know how to move around the space, where to stand to get the best images that you want. They know how to stay out of the way of medical professionals.

A birth photographer provides the extra support to your birth team. By having that dedicated person present to take pictures, your doula, your partner, your friends or family are all able to remain present how they should be to best support you. Plus your family that you wanted present at your birth are now in the pictures and will forever be preserved in the amazing memories.

Birth is a major life event that deserves to be documented. You hire a wedding photographer, maybe you even captured maternity pictures. Major life events, that you want to remember forever deserve to be documented. With a birth photographer they document all the big moments of you in labor, the face of strength you have while pushing, the breathe of relief when the baby cries, and those first hugs and kisses. All of the beauty of birth.

The photographer is also able to document all the details around you that you may not even notice is happening. The nurses moving in perfect harmony around the room, the monitors, the clock with the time baby is born, the look on your partner’s face, all of it. All of the moments that are moving so quickly as you focus on the task on hand that you don’t want to forget, the photographer documents, preserving them forever.

Birth photography is so much more than just pointing and clicking. It is art. It is storytelling. It is power and strength, just like you.
